Amethyst, Cristobalite and Fluorite - Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

This exceptionally rare amethyst specimen comes from the old collection of Luiz Menezes, one of Brazil’s most respected mineral collectors.

Originating from Rio Grande do Sul, this piece features rare inclusions of cristobalite and fluorite preserved in beautiful, bubble-like formations. The crystals formed within ancient volcanic geodes of the Serra Geral Formation, where silica-rich hydrothermal fluids filled gas cavities in basaltic rock over 100 million years ago. As the amethyst slowly crystallized, it trapped tiny silica- and fluorine-rich particles suspended in the solution. Due to surface tension and rapid shifts in temperature and pressure, these inclusions developed into rounded spherules—creating the distinctive “floating” appearance inside the quartz.

Cristobalite, a high-temperature polymorph of silica, often appears as milky or misty globules, while fluorite may present as pale green or purple orbs or zones. Both were enclosed during the later stages of amethyst growth, offering a rare glimpse into the dynamic and multi-phase environment within the geode. These inclusions not only enhance the visual allure of each piece but also serve as geological signatures of a remarkable natural process—making every specimen a unique fusion of beauty, history, and science.
